Who We Are

Church History

God has blessed Calvary Chapel. The first service for Calvary chapel FWB occurred on November 2, 1980, when 56 people met for worship in the Montgomery Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Kent Tallent was the first Pastor. The church also met in the Odd Fellows Hall in Buffalo while plans for a permanent location were being finalized.The Reverend Tom Owens became Pastor in September of 1981. Land was purchased near the southeast corner of the Buffalo city limits in the Cantlon/Eske subdivision. Ground breaking ceremonies were held in September of 1981 and construction continued into February of 1982. For the next five years the congregation met in the basement of the unfinished structure.On November 20, 1983, the Reverend Wesley Rider became Pastor. Attendance grew under his leadership. An attendance record was set on April 27, 1984 when 113 people packed into the basement for worship services. On September 9, 1984 the Rider family was called back to the St. Louis area.The Reverend Lester Davis became Pastor in February of 1985. He challenged the congregation to complete the facility. Members met the challenge, and in November of 1987, the first worship services were held in the sanctuary. At that time, the furniture had not been purchased, but would be installed two months later. One step at a time, the church was completed. In January 1989, our current Pastor, Douglas Earls, came to Calvary Chapel. Prior to his arrival attendance had declined to the 40's. Calvary Chapel has experienced a steady growth from 1989. Under his leadership, the congregation had been focused and has set goals for the present and the future. Just as the church congregation has grown, so has the facility. The Family Life Center was built in 1996. The two buildings were joined by the construction of a new north-side entry in 1999. This structure contains offices for the pastoral and administrative staff. The paving of the parking lot was a welcomed convenience. During the summer of 1997, 13 stained glass windows were added to the sanctuary and main floor rooms by donations of memorial monies.In 2001, the reality was that even with two Sunday morning worship services, the congregation was out growing the facility. The 300 worship attendance average record was reached in November of 2002. If ministries were to continue it was clear that the church would have to expand. The urgent need was for Sunday School space. With monies in the building fund, a two story addition, housing four large classrooms, was constructed on the east side of the Family Life Center. Plans were also approved for future construction of a new worship center to be constructed. In the fall of 2006, after several months of construction, the congregation moved back into the expanded sanctuary. In addition to the expanded worship space two large bathrooms a senior adult classroom, 2 childrens classrooms, a new nursery, and storage space was added to the south-side of the building.Calvary Chapel continues to serve God by seeking to bring souls to Christ. The Bible is God's word and the foundation of all we do. Starting in the summer of 2002 Calvary Chapel's ministry expanded beyond our local community to Panama. Through the years the Calvary Chapel family has grown, and with our growth, we have maintained our loving, family atmosphere. Lives are built at Calvary Chapel. We strive to develop each person spiritually and pray that each will mature in their faith and service to God.
